Three lists were in competition, one directed by Roger Gardes who is chief candidate for the first time [liste d'union pour une gestion démocratique, list of union for a democratic management], one by Jocelyn Tres [liste agir pour Saint-Genès, list to act for Saint-Genès] and the other by Charles ASTIER [liste de rassemblement des forces de gauche, list of gathering of the forces of left], which comprises only 3 candidates. (the total of the registered voters being lower than 2500 is authorized the presentation of incomplete lists. It will not be anymore the case in 2001, the treshold of the 2500 voters being crossed).
