The car race of the same name was created by American billionaire James Gordon-Bennett, owner of the New York Herald newspaper, which later became the International Herald Tribune. There were a total of six editions of this international race, which was very popular in the early days of the automobile. (80,000 spectators and more than 200 journalists attended in 1905, and eight military regiments provided security.) |
