Chronologically, it is firstly the Puy de Lasollas and then Puy de la Vache which were ranked first well before the Puys chain, in 1959 and 1962 respectively.
La law for the protection of natural monuments, sites and landscapes date from 1903 and a law of 1930 made it then completed. They both aimed to protect monuments, sites and natural landscapes against possible damage either industrial, either caused by tourism or by the activity rural or urban extension.
Lhe first site to be classified in 1907, was the Island of Brehat in Brittany.
En Auvergne, the 1st site was designated in the Cantal was the site of Alleuze in 1933 including a peak and a remarkable castle.
Lthe commune of Saint-Genès-Champanelle includes:
  • a classified area, that of the Chaîne des Puys in 1995 but which was first registered in 1972. A renewal of the classification of the Park was carried out by decree of December 6, 2000 (J.O. of December 12, 2000).
  • of areas registered not protected, the villages of Laschamps and Fontfreyde, excluded from the 1995 ranking which would have led to heavy constraints on the villages
  • two Natura 2000 zones, including the Ceyrat gorges below Berzet and the Lassolas and Vache volcanoes
  • a ZNIEFF1 zone important, the Montagne de la Serre, place of passage of migratory birds which gives rise each year counting the passages through the Bird Protection League.
  • a ZNIEFF1 zone in continuity with the Natura 2000 zone of Berzet gorges with a difference in altitude of 250 meters.
  • a ZNIEFF2 zone comprising the entire western half of the commune along a north-south axis.

The Natura 2000 areas were created on a European initiative to establish inventories of the fauna and flora of remarkable areas. This does not are not protected areas. They are simply equipped with a scientific inventory of flora and wildlife and an objective document. If work is carried out in these areas, a environmental impact document. Natura 2000 areas do not impose easements and are not enforceable to Third Parties. Each municipality must have a list of fragile environments that must be taken into account when the establishment or modification of the Local Plan of Urban Planning (PLU).

Les ZNIEFF1 and 2 zone (Natural Zones of Ecological Floristic and Fauna Interest) are national inventories established on the initiative and under the control of the Ministry of the Environment. This are scientific inventory tools and they do not do not constitute a measure of legal protection enforceable against third parties. They are very close to the areas European Natura 2000 which are enforceable against third parties and authorize legal recourse to comply with legal rules for the protection of nature.
