Children put as a nurse at Saint-Genès-Champanelle
At the 19th century, the insalubrity of the cities
increasing, the parents took the practice to place
their new-born as a nurse at the countryside to facilitate
their growth; others, for reasons morals,
in particular the young unmarried mothers, found the way of
moving away from them of the children designed except marriages what
at the time, was to bring many
nuisances. The only evidence which enables us to appreciate this phenomenon is the indication related to the death certificat of the young children, death which is declared for or the nurse. A catastrophic peak is to be noted in 1854, 16 new-born babies placed as a nurse died this year. The curve obtained between 1851 and 1900, show us a tendancy to a significant fall about 1900. One can only emit two hypothesis cross : lthe first it is that at the dawn of the 20th century, less and less family placed their child as a nurse at the countryside, the second, it is that the hygiene and living conditions radically improved in Saint-Genès-Champanelle and that the new-born one benefitted first. |
