History of the village of Saint-Genès-Champanelle

SAINT-GENÈS-CHAMPANELLE, chief town: of the commune.

- The Church. 14th century building with a very high steeple, which was made in 1839. Robert d'Auvergne, bishop of Clermont, gave this church in 1200, at the abbey of Saint-Alyre de Clermont. He there was, before 1789, a community of priests in this church, which was erected in 1532. - The cure was at the appointment of the abbey of Saint-Alyre.

- The priory. Established by the abbey of Benedictines of Saint-Alyre, to which the local church had been given. This priory already existed in 1258. He was united, from 1478, to the office of chamberlain of the Abbey of Saint-Alyre. Jean de Molles, 1478 ; Jacques de Francon, in 1499; Guillaume du Pont, in 1502-1504; Jean Le Febvre, in 1522 ; Renaud Gascoing, in 1546, were priors of Saint-Genès-Champanelle; the last at the same time exercised the functions of parish priest of this parish. - Lords. François Augier, Lord of the Shrine, Salles, Saint-Genès-Champanelle (1629), receiver of the sizes in the election of Issoire in 1604, married Marie du Prat, by whom he had: Jeanne, lady of Saint-Genès-Champanelle, married to Michel Poisson, lord of Durtol, quoted by the intendant of Auvergne, in 1637, as one of the richest inhabitants of Clermont, particular lieutenant in the election of Clermont, King's Secretary, Crown House of France; several of their children take the qualification of Saint-Genès-Champanelle at the end of the 17th century. David Mallet, Lord of Saint-Genès-Champanelle (1773), king's prosecutor at the presidial of Clermont, sold this fief to Paul Augustin de Veyny d'Arbouse, Marquis de Villemont, born in 1750, last lord of Saint-Genès-Champanelle in 1789.
