The bioshack "bio-shack"

During the 2000/2001 school year, a teacher, Mr. Michel BERNARD with the help of Mr. Yves BENOIT, external speaker (contract CEL), developed with the students of the school elementary school of Saint-Genès-Champanelle, a project of construction of a shack falling within the framework of the action "Cabins, build your adventure" initiated by the French Institute of Architecture, the Ministry of National Education and SCEREN, aiming to promote any action having as its subject "the shack" through educational workshops to raise children's awareness of architecture..

It was the architect Jacky Jeannet de Thuret who followed this Champagne project and brought its knowledge relating to rammed earth to achieve its realization.

The children ultimately titled the project: "Biokaban, build yourself by cabining".

Another project was born in Puy-de-Dôme in the Pierre and Marie Curie nursery school in Cébazat. A booklet, national collection of projects, has been printed but without that of Saint-Genès-Champanelle. The town hall was the prime contractor and provided the materials and logistics, particularly stone Manson. The Institute's endowment was 600 euros.

The children first produced wooden models and in the ground to draw up plans for a shack which would adapt to the site and especially to the slope of the land then plans were drawn in collaboration with the architect to optimize the integration of the shack into its environment with as much discretion as possible.

The shack has a surface area of 14 m². We had to try maximum use of local materials. (earth, wood, local stone).

The base was made of Manson stone. The rear was mounted in corded wood, with a sheep wool insulation. (rope=old measurement of length). The roof was covered with pozzolan and ultimately had to be vegetated. Rubble of softwoods were inserted into the walls. They have been recovered after the storm of 1999. The wall of in front is limed adobe. Windows should ultimately be asked but have not been. Shelves had to accommodate germination boxes. The Pelvis was to be used to cultivate aquatic plants inside the shack afterwards.

The construction was completed in 5 months but the development did not go all the way to what had been planned, the teaching team having changed the next year.
