History of the castle dike
Saint-Genès-Champanelle

In a letter dated August 14, 1928, after having deliberated and voted, the municipal council addressed the prefect of Puy-de-Dôme in order to demand from him authorization to take legal action against the owner from the castle of Saint-Genès-Champanelle, Mr. MARRET, whose dike had broken during the night of the 29th to the 30th May 1928. The council considered that this disaster was occurred as a result of three causes:
1) non-functioning of the bottom valve which apparently had been sealed,
2) insufficient resistance of the elevation of the dam, made only a few years ago,
3) failure to outlet the leakage channel, which was still obstructed by a fish grill.
He estimated that around 3,000 cubic meters around had then rolled down the bed of the Artière, transforming the stream into a torrent which would have ravished in its passage the Chemin du Bois, making it impassable for several months, thus hindering the quarrymen of the Ceyrat gorges and local residents.

Il therefore claims that the responsibility of Mr. MARRET, owner of the pond is recognized and that he make the dike disappear or rebuild it according to the standards then in force.

Mr. MARRET will never rebuild or repair the said dike which has still been in the same state since then.

Here is an old postcard which bears witness
to the flood of the pond but on an incorrect date
which may mislead a person not warned.
