Schools of the commune of Saint-Genès-Champanelle
Chart of the site of the schools before 1980
AFormerly, seven villages and Saint-Genès
Bourg had a school. Following a decline in enrollment,
the school in Beaune-le-Chaud was closed in October 1963
despite resistance from parents who kept their children
for a month without sending them to the school in Saint-Genès.
The administration then deprived them of family allowances,
and they had to give in to this financial blackmail, which
was unavoidable at the time. The Theix mechanic, Mr. Mijoint, was then tasked with transporting children with his Citroën Traction during that school year. The Laschamps school was closed in 1967 upon the retirement of the teacher, Mr. Boyer. The three other one-room schools were closed in 1980, and the children of the town were all grouped together between the existing buildings at the town hall and the brand-new school complex, consisting of a kindergarten and an elementary school in the village of Saint-Genès-Champanelle. The nursery school started immediately with a full complement of three classes; only two middle school classes moved into the new elementary school premises. Four classes remained at the town hall for the first year, two of which were in prefabricated buildings. The villages without schools were: Chatrat, Pardon, Thèdes, and Champeaux, whose students attended the school in Saint-Genès Bourg. These were joined in 1963 by those from Beaune-le-Chaud, in 1967 by those from Laschamps, and later by those from Berzet. Only four schools remained open in 1979: Fontfreyde, Theix, Manson, and the one in Saint-Genès-Bourg. The initial plan was to locate the new school complex in the village of Fontfreyde, but the change in municipal council in the 1977 elections resulted in this project being scrapped. The new municipal team chose the village of Saint-Genès-Champanelle, a site considered more central in the commune. |
