Little reminder

This treaty signed on February 7, 1992 transformed the European Economic Community (EEC) into the European Union (EU)

Three axes have been drawn :

1. Member States and Community institutions jointly ensure functioning of the EU according to the Treaties of Paris and Rome, modified by the Single Act. The EU acts in 17 areas such as : agriculture, transport, environment, culture...

2. A policy is put in place Foreign Affairs and Common Security (CFSP). An army corps has been set up (Eurocorps) to which, for the moment, France, Belgium, Spain and Germany will provide troops.

3. The third axis concerns the justice and home affairs: the questions borders, immigration, criminal issues cross-border borders, terrorism, drug addiction, judicial cooperation in civil, criminal and customs matters.

The treaty establishes European citizenship, affirms the right of citizens to reside in any member state as well as the right to vote and to stand for election in municipal elections in the place of residence.
